What I felt just after going through the eye-opening article, ' Motherhood ' by Prof. Paromita Sengupta, presently working as the director of studies at Griffith College, Limerick, Ireland,is going to be written here...
Review : The outmoded notion of motherhood that still exists in the DNA of society is at stake! The age-old psychological practice formed in favor of patriarchy is going to lose its grips on itself. A very insightful offering article 'Motherhood' illuminates our conscience in this regard. Having gone through it I was, in myself, thinking as if the questions mentioned in the article had already been in my unconscious state of mind. It will surely compel you to ponder over your idea of what you consider the concept of Motherhood and your Mother as well. It is worth taking into account that the camouflage, named Motherhood once the patriarchal society attributed to a particular gender in society, is now left to be detected as well as uncovered at large. There are really many problems! In our society you will find many a women considering parturation to be a mandated and one and only criterion of becoming a certified and granted Mother of a child whereas physicality should be regarded as a choice only. That it is a " deliberate patriarchal ploy to limit women, to restrict and check their potential," has been disclosed to us. Again, the tag 'Supermom' is nothing but 'blasphemous'. Women are getting victimized day by day by their approved outdoor jobs that are socielly considered to be the license of their going out of 'the Laxman-Rekha' hours after playing a very good and smart role of housewives. The women who want to be mothers without giving birth to a baby should also be taken into consideration in our society and again those who don't want to be a mother at all are regarded anything but women here... In an over populated world like ours if a woman doesn't want to give birth to a baby she should be held as no less than a deity by all, and just think if she adopts a baby ... I don't really know what esteems she actually deserves from us! Ma'm... We often tend to forget those who by sacrificing their careers are forced to get married and give birth to a baby. Is mothering for them as sought after as it is for others? The answer is a big 'NO'. That has to be rediscovered now. Add to it, there is coercion where being a mother is equivalent to being cursed! Contrary to those there are many women who at any cost just want to be mothers by putting themselves into great risky " repeated procedures of artificial reproductive techniques." The article is an imperative too in its nature as it instantly suggests to us to envisage motherhood as " a psychological state and not as a physical activity." It also suggests to us to dismantle "the existing construct of a standard motherhood." Once read it one must face a confusion in getting a clear view over whether this age-old concept of motherhood serves in favor of patriarchy or this is exactly the idea to which a good number of women willfully want to be subjected... I have just mentioned here a few points I have read from the article and I am not going to put them all here .I would rather suggest to all the viewers to read it thoroughly at least once!
